Hosted by ALESN, Chinese dance classes for adults will start December 4, 2021. Monday 2:15 to 3:15 pm – dancing with fans and ribbons Classes are free of charge. No dance experience needed and props will be provided by instructor Margaret Yuen. Classes are conducted in English and Chinese. No prior registration needed. Masks are required. Classes are on-going but are cancelled on holiday Mondays. Please note the front door on the ground floor is locked because it is a residential building for senior citizens. Just wait for someone to enter or exit the building to let you in. Take the elevator to the 4th floor, room 412. After class, ask the instructor to show you how to work the front door intercom when you leave the building. Free Chinese Fan Dance Class (outdoors)

@ 175 Delancey Street, 4th floor (indoors) - ribbons and fans Please note: The door on the ground floor is locked because it is a senior residential building. Margaret, the instructor will be at the door at 2:50 pm. She can show you how to work the pad on the wall to get the door open. If you don't see her there after 2:55, please don't go away. Wait for someone to open the door as they enter and leave the building, and come up on the elevator to the 4th floor. Once you are on the 4th floor, just ask where the dance class is taking place (there are several rooms on this floor - a community center). Margaret Yuen, Director of the Red Silk Dancers, gave a storytelling in Chinese dance virtual workshop as part of Think!Chinatown's Tuan Yuan Homecoming New Year Activities.
In Chinese classical dancing, the elegance of the art form is created by the use of the torso – fingers, wrists, eyes, neck, arms, spine - with the hands making specific gestures to tell a story. In this virtual class, you will learn a short dance sequence that will transport you to China’s classical age. The workshop is free/pay-as-you wish. All ages and abilities are welcome; no previous dance experience required. The Red Silk Dancers welcomed the Year of the Ox at Bryant Park's Lunar New Year celebration. Margaret Yuen, Director of the Red Silk Dancers, gave a free class on Chinese Ribbon Dancing. Other performances and activities included a lion dance, skating sessions, and making wishes on the wishing trees.
